Want a deal? Look no further. Beta Boutique offers samples and overruns for anywhere from 40 to 90 percent off. It's the sample sale experience within a boutique environment (read: no lines, pushing, or communal dressing rooms). Open Thursday through Sunday only.

www.eskell.com
One of my favorite stores (recently relocated to Wicker Park) is now online, featuring the designs of up-and-coming Kelly Whitesell and Elizabeth Del Castillo as well as pieces by other independent designers.

Face Hunter and The Sartorialist
Creative street fashion from globetrotting photographers. Great sites to get fresh ideas!

www.hejfina.com
Very chic (and pricey) Wicker Park shop modeled after lifestyle boutiques in Tokyo and Paris. Owner Heiji Choy chooses lines with a modern, architectural bent, like Vanessa Bruno, Isabel Marant (one of my favorites), and Jasmine Shokrian. She also carries necklaces by local designer Soo Choi. Good seasonal sales too.

www.p45.com
Both fashion-forward and more basic styles are on the racks at this Wicker Park store, which features up-and-coming designers from the Chicago area and elsewhere.

www.damecouture.com
Custom-made wedding dresses from two wonderful Chicago designers, Holly Greenhagen and Julie Fehler. Check out their gorgeous examples, or design your own.

www.lorisshoes.com
This is my favorite shoe store, not least because most sizes are already out on the floor and you can try on different styles to your heart's content. Prices range from about $50 to a couple hundred dollars.

www.yoox.com
Last season's designer leftovers on sale. In general, I believe that you should only buy designer stuff online only if you've seen it in a magazine or a shop and know exactly what you're going to get. However, it's fun to look, and this site has a good return policy.

www.net-a-porter.com
This season's designer clothes, plus some sale items. Good photo layouts too. This is best for buying hard-to-find items, as the dollar/pound exchange rate can make some items pretty expensive.

www.style.com
The home of Vogue and W. Great coverage of fashion weeks in New York and Europe.

www.nytimes.com/pages/fashion/index.html
The style page of the New York Times. Their coverage is excellent, as you might expect. Cathy Horyn is my favorite fashion writer. Her metaphors occasionally seem slightly strained, but she uses a lot of grounded language where other writers are often up in the clouds.

Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune is one of the most influential fashion critics in the world. If nothing else, reading the IHT makes one feel oh so cosmopolitan.
